The Nissan GT-R has scored its first major GT1 World Championship victory in
Portugal at the weekend with Germany's Lucas Luhr and Michael Krumm taking
victory in Round 3 of the 2011 series at the Portima circuit ahead of an
International field of Italian, British and American GT cars.
The Nissan
GT-R swept to victory in the 34-lap main race after their JR Motorsports British
teammates Richard Westbrook and Peter Dumbreck struck mechanical problems while
leading.
Underscoring the Nissan GT-R's dominance of the Portuguese
round, Australia's David Brabham and Britain's Jamie Campbell-Walter finished
third in their Sumo Power Nissan, behind the Aston Martin of Stefan Mucke and
Darren Turner, but ahead of three Lamborghinis and a Ford GT, while their Nissan
GT-R Brazilian team-mates Enrique Bernoldi and Ricardo Zonta took eighth place.
Nissan's domination of the Portuguese GT1 round began in official
qualifying, when all four of the competing Nissan GT-Rs occupied the top four
positions.
The Nissan GT-Rs then stormed to an historic 1-2-3 finish in
the qualifying race - the first ever podium lockout by a single manufacturer
since the GT1 series' formation.
The weekend was doubly successful for
Nissan motorsport, with the Nissan-powered TDS Racing Oreca of Beche/Thiriet/Firth
taking victory in the LMP2 Class in the 1000 kms of Spa ahead of the similarly
Nissan-powered Boutsen Energy Racing Oreca of Kraihamer/De Crem.
Fifth
place in LMP2 at Spa also went to Nissan, with the Signatech Nissan, driven by
Nissan's GT Academy graduate Lucas Ordonez and his teammates Franck Mailleux and
Soheil Ayari.
The next major challenge for the Nissan-powered LMP2 cars
is the annual 24 Hours of Le Mans on June 11-12.
