The presenter at Fifth Gear in the UK wanted to find out what happens when you take a
passenger car and ram it into an unmovable object at 120 miles per hour (almost
200 km/h).
The test was conducted on a first-generation Ford Focus hatchback. As the
presenter outlines, the Focus decelerated from the speed to a stop in just 68
milliseconds. Occupants would experience the forces of up to 400 g. Needless to
say, the passengers and the car were unrecognizable after the impact.
It may seem a bit silly to crash test a car at this speed, but the reality is,
there are loads and loads of high-speed accidents that occur on our roads every
year. And some of them, unfortunately, involve head-on collisions with similar
consequences as witnessed on this test.
