Liberty’s IS 43 suspension features cast-iron lower control arms designed to
withstand rock strikes and curb impacts. Concentric coil springs and shock
absorbers mounted above the upper control arms provide protection from off-road
hazards, while front-suspension jounce bumpers reduce harshness and “bottom out”
when encountering large bumps. The solid axle rear suspension features an
A-shaped upper arm, dual trailing lower arms, coil springs and stabilizer bar to
help provide a smooth, comfortable ride on- and off-road.
Since the Jeep Liberty was introduced in the 2002 model year, customers have
overwhelmingly opted for its 3.7-liter engine, rated at 210 horsepower at 5,200
rpm and with 235 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. Beginning
with the 2006 model, the 2.4-liter I-4 engine is no longer available. The
2.8-liter common rail diesel (CRD) remains an option. Two new exterior colors
are added — Midnight Blue and Inferno Red.
The 42RLE four-speed automatic transmission is standard on the Limited and
optional on the Sport and Renegade models. The NSG 370 six-speed manual
transmission is standard on Sport and Renegade.
In addition to ESP, standard features on all Liberty models are air
conditioning, assist handles, BeltAlert (seat belt reminder system), AM/FM radio

Jeep Liberty Diesel
Jeep Liberty offered the first diesel in the U.S. mid-size SUV segment in the
2005 model year. Returning in 2006 in the Liberty is the 2.8-liter common rail
diesel (CRD) engine. The 2.8-liter CRD is available on the 4x4 Sport and Limited
models, providing those vehicles with the torque of a V-8, the performance of a
V-6 and the fuel economy of a four-cylinder engine.
Providing class-leading torque and unsurpassed towing of 5,000 lbs, the
2.8-liter CRD engine is rated at an estimated 160 horsepower at 3,800 rpm and
with 295 lb-ft of torque at 1,800 rpm. Highway driving range is approximately
500 highway miles on a tank of fuel, the best in the mid-size SUV class. The
Liberty diesel’s estimated mileage is 21 city/26 highway, providing up to 32
percent better fuel economy than comparable gas engines. Diesel engines reduce
CO2 emissions by an average of 20 percent.
